Cavaletti
Here are some simple directions to make cavalettis.
Material:
2 eight foot 4"x4" treated posts.
2 half inch carriage bolts 4 inches long
2 half inch carriage bolts 8 inches long
4 each washers and nuts for carriage bolts
Equipment:
Drill with half inch bit
Saw
Adjustable wrench
Wood chisel and rubber mallet
Dust mask
Directions:
Saw one of the eight foot posts into four 2 foot sections
Find the center of each 2 foot section and measure approximately 1 and 3/4
inches to each side of the center( this measure may vary, it is half
the width of the post), mark a line on each side and half way down the side
of the post. Remove the material within the lines( the easiest way is to
saw most of the material away and then use the chisel to remove the rest).
What we are doing is forming X's with the 2 foot sections.
Assemble the X's and drill through the centers with the
1/2 inch bit and
bolt the X together with the carriage bolt. The washers will be under the
nuts.
The final steps are to stand the X's up and place the eight foot post within
the X and drill through the posts and use the 8 inch bolt to assemble the
cross piece to the X's.
The caveletti will give you three height adjustment
from approximately 8
inches high to 18 inches high and should last for years.
Safety Caution:
Whenever drilling or sawing treated posts always wear a dust mask. Sweep up
the sawdust and put in the trash. Do not use the sawdust in your vegetable
garden or compost pile.
